Then you still need mobile data on the curb: Grab, Google Maps, hotel Wi-Fi passwords, and a message to your driver. Roaming from home can work for an hour, then the bill arrives. A tourist SIM at the AIS, True, or dtac counter works if you queue. A travel eSIM installed before you fly covers the gap.

Why install before you fly
Airport days stack TDAC, immigration, bags, and pickup. Installing on home Wi-Fi removes one variable:

- Before the flight: confirm the phone is unlocked and eSIM-capable. Buy and install. Leave the Thailand line off until you want Thai data. Complete TDAC.

Is airport Wi-Fi enough instead?
BKK and DMK have Wi-Fi. It is busy, captive portals break, and you still need data in the taxi queue. Treat airport Wi-Fi as backup, not the plan.
