VAT Refund at Suvarnabhumi 2026: How to Claim Tax Back When You Fly Out of BKK

Late December and New Year pack Bangkok and Suvarnabhumi. Here's what the festive window looks like in 2026, how last year's holiday rush hit immigration, and when Fast Track helps you start the trip sooner.
FastTrack BKK uses a machine-learning operations engine to track your flight, terminal, and meet window in real time. Your greeter waits in the right place, queues feel shorter, and arrival at Suvarnabhumi stays calm.
Flying to Bangkok in November? TAT confirmed the city and both airports stayed open after late-September rain. What November high season means for Suvarnabhumi immigration and Fast Track.
Bangkok in high season is a shopping city. Malls, markets, gadgets, gold, and gifts for everyone back home. The good news: if you are a visitor, a lot of what you buy in stores can come with a VAT refund when you fly out of Suvarnabhumi (BKK).
The catch is that the refund only works if you do the airport steps in the right order, on the right day. Miss the Customs stamp before check-in, and the money usually stays in Thailand.
Reviewed against the Revenue Department's VAT Refund for Tourists pages and the Airports of Thailand (AOT) Suvarnabhumi VAT Refund page as of November 3, 2026. Rules can change, so always confirm with the officials before you fly.
According to the Revenue Department, you can claim if you are not a Thai national, you do not have a domicile in Thailand, you are not an airline crew member departing on duty, and you leave Thailand from an international airport.
A few things trip people up:
Most rejected claims start at the shop counter, not at the airport. The Revenue Department's current conditions are clear:
Here is the order the AOT Suvarnabhumi page and the Revenue Department describe.
On your departure date, go to the Customs Inspection for VAT Refund counter before you drop your bags. AOT lists the VAT Refund service area at Entrance 10, Main Terminal, Floor 4 (the departures level), open 24 hours.
The Revenue Department FAQ also says Customs stamps must be done exactly on the departure date, not in advance. Arriving the night before a 3 a.m. flight? You wait until the date changes.
If you bought luxury goods, keep them with you. The Revenue Department defines these as jewelry, gold ornaments, watches, glasses, pens, mobile or smart phones, laptops or tablets, handbags, wallets, purses, and belts worth 40,000 baht or more per item, plus carry-on goods worth 100,000 baht or more per item.
These need a second inspection after passport control. For goods too big to carry on, the FAQ says to show luggage tags and photos to the officers.
Next comes the departure immigration check. On a busy high-season evening this is often where your buffer disappears, so plan for it.
After immigration, the VAT Refund for Tourists Office is in the departure lounge. The Revenue Department lists two counters on Level 4, Concourse D (East and West). AOT says you can:
The payout depends on how much you are claiming. According to AOT and the Revenue Department FAQ:
The exact amount you receive follows the Revenue Department's official VAT Refund Table, so check it before you count on a specific figure.
Missed the counter? The FAQ explains a postal claim with Customs-stamped forms, passport copies showing your entry and exit stamps, and a copy of your credit card. Forms that needed a Customs stamp but did not get one cannot be claimed.
If you research this yourself, you may see older numbers. Some English pages on the main Revenue Department site (last updated between 2016 and 2022) still mention a 5,000 baht Customs threshold and a 10,000 baht luxury threshold.
The Revenue Department's own press release dated 30 November 2023 says those limits were raised to 20,000 baht and 40,000 baht (with carry-on goods moving from 50,000 to 100,000 baht), effective 1 December 2023, to cut Customs queues ahead of high season. The department estimated daily Customs inspections would fall from about 4,800 to 1,400 people. The current VAT Refund for Tourists site and the AOT page use the newer numbers, so that is what we follow here.
The VAT refund adds stops to your departure: a Customs counter before check-in, then a refund office after passport control. Each one takes time, and in high season every queue adds up.
A departure fast-track service cannot do your Customs inspection or sign your forms for you. What it can do is make the passport-control part of the walk faster, which leaves more time for the refund counter and the gate.
The VAT refund at Suvarnabhumi is very doable once you know the order: shop right, stamp at Customs before check-in when required, clear passport control, then hand in your forms airside. Get those steps right and your Bangkok shopping trip pays you back a little on the way home.
Pro tip: if you are close to the 20,000 baht line across all your forms, pack your purchases where you can reach them easily. If Customs needs to see them, you will not want to dig through a checked suitcase at the counter.
This guide is general information, not tax advice. VAT refund rules, counter locations, and payment options can change. Confirm with the Revenue Department (call center 1161) or the VAT Refund for Tourists Office at the airport before you rely on a refund.
